- After the 1-0 win at Bournemouth on 20 September, Van Dijk said nobody had approached him about a new deal.
- Emile Heskey said Real Madrid "turn your head whether you're under contract or not" and that he would be surprised if Van Dijk's head is not turned.

- Heskey called Dominik Szoboszlai a future Liverpool captain and said securing him should be a priority.
Ex-Liverpool player Emile Heskey says Real Madrid would tempt Virgil van Dijk as his deal nears its end, and warns against letting another star leave for nothing.
Liverpool tied captain Virgil van Dijk to a contract extension in April 2025, and that agreement has now entered its closing year without a successor in place. His case has revived a recurring dilemma at the club: how to handle a marquee figure whose terms are running out.
Van Dijk revealed after the 1-0 win away to Bournemouth on 20 September that no one had opened discussions with him over new terms. Inside the player's camp the mood is described as calm, yet such calm rarely slows outside speculation, least of all when Real Madrid enter the conversation.
Seen that way, age, loyalty and standing matter less than the magnetism a small group of clubs carry. Van Dijk is a 35-year-old defender edging toward free agency, and a late move to an elite stage is an obvious possibility for a player in that position.
Former Liverpool player Emile Heskey put the point bluntly. "Virgil van Dijk, he is coming to the end of his contract at Liverpool, but we've got to remember that when certain clubs come calling they turn your head whether you're under contract or not, and Real Madrid is one of them," Heskey said, adding: "So I'd be surprised if his head's not turned. The only thing is that Liverpool letting another big star go at the end of their contract doesn't sit well with me."
He carried the warning to the stands, predicting supporters would feel the same. "And it won't [sit well] with the fans either because despite his age he still has value. That's something that Van Dijk has to consider given his status at Liverpool," Heskey said.
For Liverpool, the available paths are threefold: extend the defender's terms, sell him, or let the agreement run to its finish. Drifting is cast as the one unacceptable choice, since delay with a leading player this near the end of his deal tends to prove expensive. Even at 35, Van Dijk remains an asset in both monetary and sporting terms.
Heskey also looked to the dressing room's next generation, naming midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai a captain in the making. "Dominik Szoboszlai is a future Liverpool captain," he said. Tying the midfielder down should, in Heskey's view, rank among the club's priorities, both because leadership counts and because players of that caliber shape how outsiders rate a squad.
The result is a twin question for the hierarchy at Liverpool. One side concerns Van Dijk and whether the club moves before Madrid's interest hardens into anything concrete. The other concerns the longer term and the intention to construct the team around Szoboszlai. Neither question, the analysis holds, rewards procrastination.
Real Madrid, the club at the center of the speculation, are next in action away to Barcelona on Sunday, October 4, kicking off at 1:00 PM EDT at Spotify Camp Nou.
