Illinois women's basketball keeps working the 2027 recruiting cycle even though the program cannot predict how its roster will look. Under the NCAA's new "5-for-5" age-based eligibility rule adopted this summer, college athletes can play five seasons inside a five-year span.
That policy creates a puzzle for the 2027-28 Illini squad. In theory, the entire current lineup could stick around, since none of the 15 players now on the roster is scheduled to run out of eligibility once 2026-27 concludes. As a result, the coaching staff cannot say whether any openings will exist and has had to narrow its list of prospects.
Two prominent 2027 targets have already come off the board: a 6-foot-7 center from Montverde Academy in Florida committed to Texas, and a 6-2 power forward from Big Walnut in Ohio picked Ohio State. Attention now shifts to the remaining names near the front of Illinois' board.
Among them is a four-star combo guard from Windward High School in Los Angeles, listed at 6-0 and rated as high as No. 22 in the 2027 class. That player visited the Illinois campus on an official trip earlier this month and competed on the Nike EYBL 17U circuit with Sports Academy Swish, posting averages of 10.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 2.8 steals on 44 percent shooting from the field.
Coach Green addressed the dynamic in July, saying the rule change has pushed the program to target only players capable of contributing right away. She noted she would prefer no vacancies at all, with the current group returning, but said the staff continues to pursue a couple of 2027 prospects it believes can genuinely help.
