Indiana remained perfect on the season Friday night, edging Northwestern 29-23 at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington. The victory moved the Hoosiers to 4-0 and kept alive a 20-game winning streak that stretches back through the Curt Cignetti era.
The game was not settled until the final minute, when Indiana recovered a Northwestern onside kick. Like much of the Hoosiers' performance, the recovery was imperfect, but it was enough to close out a game that stayed tight throughout.
Penalties were unusually common for an Indiana team under Cignetti. The Hoosiers were flagged eight times, several of which extended Northwestern drives, though the Wildcats were less disciplined overall with nine penalties for 57 yards.
A potentially significant concern for Indiana was an injury to running back Turbo Richard, who left the game and never returned to the sideline. Head coach Curt Cignetti did not disclose details about the nature of the injury.
Richard's absence stings because the Hoosiers are already expected to be without wide receiver Khobie Martin for at least several more weeks. With the running game central to offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan's scheme, and neither Sean Cuono nor Jayreon Campbell having clearly earned the staff's trust, the backfield depth is thinning at a bad time.
Indiana survived largely because of Lee Beebe Jr.'s performance. Beebe rushed for 203 yards on 24 carries, breaking off runs of 39 and 70 yards on the Hoosiers' final two touchdown drives. He ran hard between the tackles but also bounced plays outside when the offensive line struggled to generate push. If Richard is out long term, Beebe could face a heavy workload unless another back emerges to share carries.
Quarterback Josh Hoover finished with a solid stat line, completing 19 of 29 passes for 201 yards and a touchdown, but his accuracy was an early issue. He missed on throws to Nick Marsh and overthrew and underthrew a pair of deep shots to Charlie Becker on the same drive that could have gone for touchdowns. He settled in as the game progressed, though sharper play from the start might have prevented the game from being as close as it was.
On the other side, Northwestern quarterback Aidan Chiles caused problems for Indiana defensive coordinator Bryant Haines with his elusiveness. Facing third-and-13 on the Wildcats' second drive of the third quarter, Chiles escaped pressure for a 15-yard run that extended a possession ending in Northwestern's first touchdown. He was also efficient as a passer, going 22 of 29 for 293 yards and two touchdowns.
Indiana's defensive line played well, but Chiles showed how the Hoosiers' defense can be vulnerable when its pressure does not convert into sacks or takeaways. Few quarterbacks can evade pressure the way Chiles did, so the performance was not seen as a major red flag, but it exposed a limitation worth watching as the season continues.
