Verlander, who declared in July that this season would be his final one, admitted to the Detroit Free Press that the day will bring a mix of feelings. "There's a lot of emotion going through, but also some angst to go pitch," he said, adding that he intends to prepare fully so he can perform at his best.

Known for a locked-in pregame routine built around shutting out distractions, Verlander said this start demands the opposite. He plans to skip the headphones, converse with those around him, and soak in the atmosphere rather than block it out.

"I don't think I'm gonna put the headphones on, I'm not gonna not talk to people, that's not what this is about," Verlander explained. His goal is balancing appreciation of the occasion with a genuine effort to help the Tigers win.

The start also lets him share the moment with his young daughter, Genevieve. Verlander recalled wanting to extend his career long enough for her to form memories of it, calling the chance to include her "really really special."

The Tigers had hoped to schedule the farewell for Saturday once Verlander finished his throwing program, which he has now completed. Rather than ending his career on the injured list, he gets a final turn on the mound before the Detroit fans who followed him from promising prospect to one of the game's elite pitchers.
