Kentucky Heads to South Carolina as Beamer's Gamecocks Seek First SEC Win

The Wildcats (3-1, 1-1 SEC) face South Carolina (2-2, 0-2) on Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium, where the Gamecocks have dropped seven straight conference games.

Kentucky takes a 3-1 record on the road Saturday for an SEC Week 5 game against South Carolina at Williams-Brice Stadium. The Wildcats are 1-1 in conference play, while the Gamecocks are 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the SEC.

The matchup marks a return to league action for a Kentucky program off to a strong start in Will Stein's first season as coach. The Wildcats won nonconference home games against Youngstown State and South Alabama and beat a Texas A&M team then ranked in the top 10 on the road.

Much of the attention falls on South Carolina coach Shane Beamer. In his sixth season, Beamer is 35-32 overall and 16-26 in SEC games, and the Gamecocks have gone a full calendar year without beating a conference opponent. That last league win came against Kentucky on Sept. 27, 2025, and seven straight SEC losses have followed, including defeats by Mississippi State and Alabama in the past two weeks.

The downturn runs deeper than this month. Since a 9-4 season in 2024, South Carolina has lost 12 of 18 games, and Beamer's buyout, nearly $28 million if he is fired before Dec. 31 and $22.1 million after that date, has become a popular topic. The Gamecocks held a lead in five of the seven straight conference losses, twice letting advantages of at least 16 points get away: 16-0 against Mississippi State on Sept. 19, and 30-3 at halftime of last season's 31-30 defeat at Texas A&M.

Last week's loss to Alabama added to the turmoil. Television cameras showed Beamer yelling at edge rusher Dylan Stewart for loafing in the first half; Stewart later punched an Alabama player and was not ejected, then refused to come off the field when Julian Walker was sent in as his replacement, shoving Walker back toward the sideline before coaches removed him. Beamer suspended Stewart indefinitely on Sunday, Sept. 27.

South Carolina does have recent history on its side in this rivalry. The Gamecocks have beaten Kentucky four times in a row and lead the series 22-14-1, a record that reflects Kentucky vacating a 2021 victory because of NCAA violations. The matchup has swung in long stretches before: South Carolina won 10 straight from 2000 through 2009, and Kentucky took five in a row from 2014 through 2018.

Kentucky's passing game could be a decisive factor. Quarterback Kenny Minchey threw for 301 yards and four touchdowns in the opener but has four touchdown passes combined over the three games since, while still completing 51 of 74 passes (68.9%) for 575 yards with one interception in that stretch. His season completion rate of 68.3% would be the third-best mark in school history if it holds.

The opposing defense may offer a chance to get going. South Carolina has allowed nine touchdown passes in the past two weeks: four each to Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor and Alabama's Keelon Russell, plus a trick-play touchdown throw from Bulldogs wide receiver Gracen Harris on Sept. 19. The Gamecocks recorded one interception across those two losses while opponents completed 39 of 53 passes, 73.6%.

Elsewhere on the field, Kentucky running back Jovantae Barnes, a fifth-year senior from Las Vegas, broke out against South Alabama with 100 yards and a touchdown on eight carries, his first 100-yard game since a career-high 203 for Oklahoma against Maine on Nov. 2, 2024. Wildcats linebacker Alex Afari, working back into shape after receiving a fifth season of eligibility, led the team with nine tackles in that game. Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers has had an uneven season, with six touchdown passes and four interceptions.
