Lewis Koumas needed only a few days of pre-season to make an impression on Liverpool's new manager, Andoni Iraola, and within the opening month of the campaign he has shown he belongs in the club's thinking. Ian Rush, the club great, is one of several observers won over by the attacker, whose ability was recognized long before his recent emergence. Barry Lewtas, who previously coached Liverpool's Under-21 side, has called him "a coach's dream."
A lifelong Liverpool fan, Koumas joined the club while still in primary school. His father, Jason, once played alongside Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen as a nine-year-old before leaving for Tranmere without breaking through at Anfield. Lewis switched from midfield to a forward position at 16, a move Lewtas considers a key step in his growth, giving him experience on the ball in deeper areas before settling into the role that suits him best.
Klopp handed Koumas his senior bow in 2024, and he found the net in an FA Cup tie with Southampton that February. He was on the bench, unused, when Liverpool defeated Chelsea in the League Cup final at Wembley. His next first-team outing came more than 900 days later, after three Championship loans.
At Stoke, he worked under three managers in one season and won a place in each of their plans, a stint credited with strengthening his self-belief. He then made 25 appearances for Birmingham City in the first half of last season, only seven of them league starts, before switching to Hull City, where he contributed to the Tigers' promotion through the play-offs. He came back to Liverpool over the summer with restored confidence and has since received a Wales call-up.
