Mbappe's 58 Goals Power Ballon d'Or Bid, but Rivals Hold the Trophies

The short version
- Mbappe scored 58 goals for Real Madrid and France across 2025-26 and the World Cup, including 42 in 44 matches for Madrid.
- The Ballon d'Or evaluation period ended July 19, so current-season performances do not count toward the 2026 award.
- Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane, Rodri and Ousmane Dembele head rival cases built on team trophies.
- Mbappe scored France's winner against Türkiye on Sept. 25, then was diagnosed with a left-knee hyperextension expected to keep him out around two weeks.
The Real Madrid forward piled up 58 goals in 2025-26, yet Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane and Rodri bring team trophies to the 2026 Ballon d'Or race.
Kylian Mbappe sits among the leading contenders for the 2026 Ballon d'Or on the strength of a 58-goal campaign, yet his case lacks the team trophies that often sway voters. The award's official website credits him with 58 goals for Real Madrid and France across the 2025-26 season and the World Cup, production achieved while his sides fell short of major collective honors.
The numbers behind the candidacy are extensive. Mbappe scored 42 goals in 44 matches for Real Madrid in 2025-26, with 25 arriving in LaLiga and 15 in the Champions League, a haul that made him the competition's top scorer. He also became France's all-time leading scorer during the campaign and claimed the World Cup Golden Boot.
What his resume lacks is silverware. France reached the World Cup semifinals before falling to Spain, and Real Madrid closed the season without the major collective prize Mbappe had hoped to deliver. In September, Mbappe acknowledged the unusual shape of his case, citing his individual output while noting that neither Madrid nor France secured the trophies that would have strengthened it. The award, however, is not decided on team honors alone.
His chief rivals hold the opposite strengths. Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal helped his club retain LaLiga and was part of Spain's World Cup-winning squad, adding recognition as LaLiga's best player for 2025-26. Harry Kane scored 61 goals in 51 matches for Bayern Munich as the club collected domestic honors while contributing significantly for England, and Rodri's influence was especially prominent in Spain's run to the title. Ousmane Dembele also remains in the conversation after another successful period with Paris Saint-Germain.
Timing adds another layer. The official evaluation window closed on July 19, so performances after that date — among them Mbappe's current-season goals and Real Madrid's recent derby defeat — play no part in the 2026 vote.
Mbappe's present form has been sharp regardless. He struck twice in Real Madrid's 4-1 win over Rayo Vallecano on Sept. 12, reaching six LaLiga goals through five appearances, then scored against Elche on Sept. 15 for seven goals in his first six league games.
The club's momentum then stalled in the derby. Real Madrid entered the Sept. 20 meeting with Atletico Madrid having won five of its first six LaLiga matches, but Atletico took a 2-1 victory with two goals early in the second half after a scoreless opening 45 minutes. Dean Huijsen was sent off in the 52nd minute and Antonio Rüdiger scored Madrid's late goal in what was the team's second loss in its first seven league matches, on eight shots and three on target.
Attention has since turned to Mbappe's fitness. He scored France's winner in a 1-0 Nations League victory over Türkiye on Sept. 25 but came off in the second half with discomfort in his left knee, and Real Madrid confirmed a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of that knee. The club said his recovery would be monitored, with reports indicating an absence of around two weeks. France won without him on Sept. 28, beating Belgium 1-0 on Michael Olise's late goal, and the report lists Villarreal on Oct. 10 as Real Madrid's next scheduled LaLiga match.
On the Global Sportscast schedule, Real Madrid visits Barcelona on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 1:00 p.m. EDT at Spotify Camp Nou, and Belgium faces France on Monday, Oct. 5 at 2:45 p.m. EDT at the Stade de France.
