Leite's OT flurry lifts Fire past Valkyries 90-82 in season finale

Carla Leite scored the go-ahead basket late in overtime and added a three-point play as Portland closed its season by ending Golden State's six-game win streak.

Carla Leite delivered in the closing moments of overtime, scoring the tiebreaking basket with 1:57 remaining and then converting a three-point play with 26.5 seconds left as the Portland Fire beat the Golden State Valkyries 90-82 on Tuesday night.

Leite finished with 18 points for Portland (17-27), which snapped a four-game losing streak to close the season. Bridget Carleton led the Fire with 26 points, hitting five 3-pointers.

Gabby Williams scored 17 for Golden State (31-12), which opened the game on a 17-0 run and led 24-10 after one quarter, but saw its six-game winning streak come to an end. The result also handed the No. 1 playoff seed to the Minnesota Lynx.

Overtime began with the teams trading free throws and 3-pointers before Leite's layup put Portland up 84-82. After Kaila Charles missed a 3-point try, Leite's step-back 20-foot jumper and free throw extended the lead to 87-82, and the Fire sealed it at the line.

In regulation, Tiffany Hayes' 3-pointer gave Golden State a 75-68 lead with 2:13 left, but Portland rallied on layups from Carleton and Megan DiLeo before Leite's driving score and free throw put the Fire ahead 77-75. Williams tied it at 77, then missed an off-balance jumper that sent the game to overtime.

Golden State closes the regular season with a visit to Los Angeles on Thursday. Portland's season is complete.
