A friendship that began at age 5 led Drew Mestemaker and Miles Coleman from North Texas to Stillwater, where they now start together for the Cowboys.
Quarterback Drew Mestemaker and receiver Miles Coleman have been close since they were five years old, and that bond eventually carried them both to Oklahoma State. The path ran through North Texas, where Coleman had signed and where his lobbying helped convince Mestemaker to accept a late walk-on offer instead of heading to Sam Houston.
After the 2023 season, Mestemaker, who had never started a varsity game at quarterback at Vandegrift High School in Austin, Texas, had a walk-on spot at Sam Houston, helped by his high school coaches' connections there. But while training after his senior year, he drew interest from North Texas, where head coach Eric Morris and quarterbacks coach Sean Brophy called Coleman to ask about him as a person and a player.
Coleman spent roughly a week pitching his friend on joining him, and Mestemaker ultimately chose North Texas, telling Coleman the two would play together. The friendship factored heavily in the decision, alongside the appeal of Morris's offensive system.
Both later moved on to Oklahoma State, where Coleman caught his first touchdown as a Cowboy last week against Murray State and is one of four receivers with at least 10 catches and 100 yards this season. The two are also roommates and remain each other's closest targets on and off the field.
Oklahoma State opens Big 12 play Saturday at West Virginia, with the longtime friends now starting together for the Cowboys.
