Oklahoma's David Stone avoids serious knee damage, status pending for Georgia

Coach Brent Venables said X-rays on the defensive tackle's left knee showed no break and did not rule him out of Saturday's game at Georgia.

Oklahoma defensive tackle David Stone went down with a left knee injury during Monday's practice, but the program appears to have avoided a worst-case outcome. Head coach Brent Venables told reporters Tuesday that Stone collided with a scout-team player during a jog-through and the knee briefly "kind of popped out."

Venables indicated the X-rays came back positive, which in context meant no fracture was found. He also described Stone's discomfort as a two on a 10-point scale and left open the possibility that the junior could suit up for Saturday's road game against Georgia.

Stone, listed at 6-foot-3 and 315 pounds, earned Associated Press preseason first-team All-America honors and is projected as an early pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. Through this season he has recorded 12 tackles, including two for loss, plus half a sack. A year ago he finished with 42 tackles and eight tackles for loss.

The potential absence would come against a Georgia team currently averaging a nation-best 59.3 points per game. Bishop Thomas and Braxton Fely, both fifth-year players, sit behind Stone on the most recent Oklahoma depth chart.
