Mahomes: Chiefs 'Didn't Play to Our Standard' in 21-10 Win Over Dolphins

The Kansas City Chiefs preserved their unbeaten start to the 2026 NFL season with a 21-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins, a result that lifted them to 3-0. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, though, treated the aftermath as an occasion for candor, spending his time with reporters detailing what the team did wrong rather than dwelling on another win.

Speaking with reporters afterward, Mahomes admitted that Kansas City fell below its own expectations for stretches of the game. "Obviously, we didn't play to our standard, especially in the middle part of the game, from the second to the third quarter," he said. "But we found a way to come together at the end of the game. Now it's about learning the in-between."

He pushed the point further, presenting the victory as evidence that the Chiefs cannot show up at anything less than their best and expect to keep winning. "It'll be a learning experience for us to know that we have to come with our A-game every single time in order to win," Mahomes said. "But at the end of the day, we are 3-0."

The win stretched a start to the season that has put Mahomes in the running for another MVP award. His form has also brought talk of a Comeback Player of the Year honor, which would be the first of his career.

His production against Miami supported that case. Mahomes connected on 20 of 24 attempts for 246 yards and two touchdowns, a line in keeping with the level he has displayed since the season began, though he also threw an interception on one of his passes.

Travis Kelce and Kenneth Walker III accounted for all three Kansas City touchdowns. Mahomes hit Kelce on an 11-yard scoring pass and found Walker from five yards out, while a 48-yard catch-and-run between Mahomes and Kelce set up Walker's 10-yard rushing touchdown.

The flaws behind Mahomes' tone were visible across the box score. While Kansas City's defense held Miami to 10 points, it did not record a single sack. The Chiefs were also flagged eight times for 50 yards, and the offense went without a point from the end of the second quarter until the start of the fourth.

Nor is the skeptical tone a new development. After Kansas City's win over the Colts earlier this season, Mahomes stressed similar areas in need of improvement, a sign that an unblemished record has not changed how he judges his team's performances.

The broader aim is the standard Kansas City wants to carry into a championship push. Rather than treating an early-season win as a reason for satisfaction, Mahomes wants the Chiefs to remember the flaws that surfaced against Miami, on the thinking that the margin for error in a Super Bowl campaign is small.
