Red Wings prospects power 7-4 preseason win in Pittsburgh

Detroit's young talent combined for a seven-goal outburst against the Penguins to even the club's exhibition record at 1-1-0.

The Detroit Red Wings rolled to a 7-4 preseason win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sept. 22 in Pittsburgh, leveling their exhibition mark at 1-1-0. The victory was powered largely by young players pushing for roster spots.

Michael Brandsegg-Nygard scored two goals, including one on the power play, while Anton Johansson chipped in four assists and Axel Sandin-Pellikka added a goal. Mason Appleton, Ondrej Becher, Wilmer Skoog and Jesse Kiiskinen also found the net, and Ben Chiarot and Theo Rochette each recorded two assists.

Detroit broke the game open in the third period, when Becher, Skoog and Kiiskinen scored in a span of 4 minutes 22 seconds, turning a 4-3 lead into a 7-3 advantage.

In goal, John Gibson stopped 22 of 24 shots across the first two periods. Trey Augustine closed it out with six saves on eight shots in the third.

The Red Wings continue their four-game exhibition schedule Thursday against the Buffalo Sabres at Little Caesars Arena.
