The unbeaten Bulldogs quarterback has thrown for 1,192 yards and 14 TDs, drawing Nick Saban portal remarks and a Dak Prescott comparison before facing Alabama.
Mississippi State and Alabama carried identical 4-0 records into their matchup, and much of the attention around the game has centered on Bulldogs quarterback Kamario Taylor, who arrived with his stock rising after a month of standout play and a week of national discussion about his future.
The numbers explain the spotlight. Taylor has completed nearly 70 percent of his passes, throwing for 1,192 yards with 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions across four games.
He kept it going against the Crimson Tide, completing 16 of 29 passes for two touchdowns and one interception by halftime.
The reviews have not been unanimous. Former national champion Breiden Fehoko offered a mixed assessment on X amid the matchup, writing that Taylor "throws one of the prettiest balls in the nation" but that, outside of that, "I'm trying to see the hype" because the quarterback "reminds me of Anthony Richardson."
Taylor's play has also fueled talk about a potential transfer portal entry, with many believing a player of his talent is unlikely to finish his college career at Mississippi State. On ESPN's College GameDay, Nick Saban said he would have tried to get Taylor into the portal if he were coaching today. The exchange became one of the week's biggest talking points, and Taylor answered within hours by reaffirming his loyalty to the school and its maroon-and-white colors.
Paul Finebaum later aimed his criticism at Saban rather than at fans. He said, per Al.com, that he does not blame listeners who call radio shows predicting Taylor will head to LSU or play for Kalen DeBoer. The person he does blame, he said, is Saban, "because Nick Saban went on College GameDay and showed the arrogance of Alabama."
Finebaum even acknowledged that his stance "may be verboten" before doubling down. In his view, the arrogance on display sends the wrong message, one that could leave Mississippi State supporters feeling their program is not good enough if Alabama, LSU and Georgia are free to take any player they want.
Finebaum has also linked Taylor to the best quarterback in school history. Dak Prescott played for the Bulldogs from 2011 to 2015, and Finebaum recalled on SEC Network's pregame show on Saturday visiting the campus a decade ago, when an undefeated Prescott-led team was making its run. He said he would not "go on a limb and make some ridiculous statement," before adding: "They have a quarterback now that may be better than Dak Prescott: Kamario Taylor."
The Crimson Tide stand as the strongest opponent Taylor has faced this season, and with Mississippi State's unbeaten record on the line, a victory would only add weight to the Prescott comparison — and to the broader debate about where the quarterback's career goes from here.
