The US captain left the US Open champion off this week's Presidents Cup roster but says he would be surprised if Spaun misses the Ryder Cup in Ireland.
American Presidents Cup captain Brandt Snedeker says he would be surprised if JJ Spaun is absent from the US Ryder Cup side in 2027, even though the US Open champion was not chosen for this week's matches at Medinah.
Spaun, ranked 12th in the world, responded to the omission by winning the European Tour's PGA Championship at Wentworth last weekend. He said the captain's call motivated him and that he competed with a chip on his shoulder, wanting to show he belonged on the team.
Speaking Tuesday, Snedeker called the decision gut-wrenching and said he had roughly 15 or 16 players under consideration. He explained that advisors urged him to follow his instincts, and the call was a difficult one.
Snedeker added that he feels terrible for Spaun, whom he described as a great competitor, and noted he told every player who missed the roster that their job was to prove him wrong as quickly as possible.
The Presidents Cup, a biennial contest between 12 American players and an international squad from outside Europe, begins Thursday at Medinah Country Club near Chicago. The US has won the last 10 editions and 13 of 15 overall. The 2027 Ryder Cup against Europe is scheduled for Adare Manor in Limerick, with Jim Furyk captaining the US side.
