Eaton volleyball senior Shandon Garrett averaged 21.3 kills over three matches and earned Dayton Daily News Athlete of the Week honors through reader voting.
Shandon Garrett, a senior outside hitter and middle for Eaton High School volleyball, was named the Dayton Daily News Athlete of the Week for Sept. 14-20, an honor presented by Orthopaedic Institute of Dayton and decided by reader voting at DaytonDailyNews.com. Garrett learned of her nomination while at a doctor's appointment and immediately shared the news with her father.
Over a three-match stretch against Greenville, Brookville and Dayton Christian, Garrett averaged 21.3 kills and 14.6 digs per match while hitting at a 48.8 percent attack rate across 10 total sets. Eaton won all three matches, and each was tightly contested — no set in the stretch was decided by more than seven points, putting a premium on every point played.
Her production climbed as the week progressed. She opened with 18 kills against Greenville and closed with 26 in the victory over Dayton Christian. She carried that form into a Monday, Sept. 21 match against Kenton Ridge, posting a double-double of 26 kills and 25 digs.
Garrett describes herself as a confident, vocal presence on the court and a teammate who will stand up for others. As a senior, she has worked to grow a more team-oriented mindset alongside seven teammates she has played with for the past six years, including finding ways to help others in practice.
Her career résumé includes top-five finishes in kills in the Southwestern Buckeye League in each of her three prior seasons, and she is contending for the top spot this year. She has recorded more than 1,300 kills over her four-year career, breaking Eaton's school record in the category.
Positionally, Garrett played middle for most of last season and enjoyed it, appreciating the added running and back-and-forth play, though she also likes the steadier role on the outside. Her versatility has helped anchor the Eagles' attack.
Garrett is committed to continue her volleyball career at Cleveland State. Proximity to Lake Erie factored into her decision, and she joked it would be fun if the Vikings ever scheduled a match on the lake. Until then, her focus is on making more memories with her Eaton teammates.
