Idle Texas Keeps No. 1 in State Rankings; Texas Tech and Houston Win

The short version
- No. 1 Texas (4-0) was idle and plays Oklahoma on Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
- No. 2 Texas Tech (5-0) beat Colorado 29-7, giving Joey McGuire his 40th win in 58 games, the fastest such mark for a Red Raiders coach.
- No. 3 Houston (4-1) rallied past UCF with quarterback Conner Weigman playing through illness.
- Baylor's DJ Lagway threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another score in a 55-19 win over Arizona State.
- North Texas beat Tulsa 45-44 in overtime Thursday on an upheld stop of a two-point try.
Texas stayed No. 1 among the state's 13 FBS teams on an open date, with No. 2 Texas Tech and No. 3 Houston winning behind the Longhorns before Saturday's Oklahoma game in Dallas.
The latest in-state ranking of Texas's 13 Football Bowl Subdivision programs changed little at the top after a weekend with few upsets. No. 1 Texas did not play, and No. 2 Texas Tech and No. 3 Houston both won to hold their places behind the Longhorns.
Texas (4-0) spent the weekend on an open date and next meets Oklahoma on Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The game against the Sooners is the Longhorns' first since the bye.
Texas Tech (5-0) held second after a 29-7 victory over Colorado. Coach Joey McGuire acknowledged his team looked rough in stretches, but the result was his 40th win in 58 games in Lubbock, and no Red Raiders coach has reached 40 wins faster.
Houston (4-1) came from behind to beat UCF on Saturday in Houston behind quarterback Conner Weigman, who played while ill. Weigman celebrated a second-half touchdown with tight end Patrick Overmyer, and the Cougars wore helmets with a space theme for the game.
SMU (4-1) stayed fourth by beating a Boston College team coached by former Texans coach Bill O'Brien, with Marques White recording three of the Mustangs' five sacks. White is in his eighth season of college football and his first at SMU after stops at Dartmouth, McNeese State and UMass. Texas A&M (3-2) ended a two-game losing streak with a 34-7 win over Arkansas while wearing camouflage uniforms, a game in which Carsyn Baker and Marcel Reed celebrated a touchdown. "In this day and age, you need positivity. You need joy. You need to be able to go out and play this game and enjoy playing this game," Aggies coach Mike Elko said.
Baylor (4-1) moved up one spot to No. 6 after a 55-19 win over Arizona State in which DJ Lagway threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another score, with a jump pass in the mold of Tim Tebow among the few things that went wrong. UTSA (4-1) slipped one spot to No. 7 despite getting past Rice 16-14 in Houston. "My intention was to get on the bus and go home 4-1," Roadrunners coach Jeff Traylor said. "This was a trap game, man, if you want to be very honest. This was a trap game from hell."
TCU (2-3) stayed eighth after a 17-10 loss to No. 10 BYU that left the Horned Frogs 0-2 in Big 12 play for the first time since 2013. Texas State (2-3) lost 31-29 at San Diego State in the Pac-12 debut for both schools, a game televised on the CW that ended around 1 a.m.
North Texas (3-2) outlasted Tulsa 45-44 in overtime on Thursday after a replay review upheld the Mean Green's stop of a Tulsa two-point conversion attempt. Rice (1-4) stayed close against UTSA in the Owls' first game at the newly named First Community Stadium, where Jacurri Brown capped a 20-play, 88-yard drive with a touchdown to cut the lead to 16-14 with 13:35 remaining. The Owls then punted and turned the ball over on downs on their final two possessions.
Sam Houston (1-3) was idle ahead of a stretch of four midweek games that begins Thursday at Liberty. UTEP (1-3) lost 61-7 to New Mexico and has allowed 207 points in five games, with only Louisiana-Monroe, at 223 in five, giving up more.
