Jalen Duren Reportedly Turns Down $200M Extension From Pistons

The Detroit center declined a nine-figure offer while eligible for a larger five-year deal the team won't meet, echoing past NBA gambles.

Jalen Duren, the Detroit Pistons' 22-year-old center, has reportedly said no to a $200 million contract extension. League rules allow him to sign for as much as $287 million over five years, a figure the Pistons have shown no willingness to pay.

During the 2024-25 regular season, Duren posted 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds a night, recognition that included an All-Star nod and a spot on the All-NBA Third Team. His production fell to 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds once the playoffs arrived, and that dip is seen as the reason Detroit is holding the line at roughly $40 million per season.

Public sentiment, by most accounts, sides with the franchise, with many around the league viewing the refusal as a miscalculation by the young big man. NBA history offers several cautionary tales involving players who passed on major offers betting they were worth more.

James Harden passed on a three-year, $161.1 million extension from the Brooklyn Nets in 2021, gambling on a bigger payday the next summer. Brooklyn never made a deep postseason push, Harden was dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers, and he eventually declined a $47.4 million player option before settling for two years and $68.6 million in Philadelphia.

Nerlens Noel rejected a four-year, $70 million offer from the Dallas Mavericks in 2017 while holding out for a max deal, instead taking a $4.1 million qualifying offer. His market value collapsed afterward, and he collected only about $12 million across the following four seasons, later suing his former agency over the losses.

Victor Oladipo, like Duren an All-NBA Third Team selection, received a three-year, $80 million extension from the Indiana Pacers after his 2017-18 season. A serious quad injury the following year derailed him, and he never approached that money again, even refusing a two-year, $45.2 million extension from Houston in 2021 before finishing on a one-year minimum contract with Miami.
