Rebecka Blomqvist converted a penalty around the hour mark to give Eintracht Frankfurt a narrow 1-0 victory at Hafnarfjarðar in the opening leg of their second qualifying round playoff in the UEFA Women's Europa Cup. The deciding moment came after captain Laura Freigang was fouled, with Frankfurt having struggled to break through for much of the contest.
Blomqvist arrived in good form, having scored the winning goal against Mainz in a domestic fixture at the weekend. The result extends a strong run for Niko Arnautis's side, which has now recorded four consecutive victories despite a summer in which several important players departed the club.
Frankfurt, who reached the semi-finals of this competition last season, narrowly missed out on qualifying for the league phase of the Champions League. The German club will host the Icelandic side in the return leg next week.
Before that second leg, Frankfurt are scheduled to open their DFB-Pokal Frauen campaign at home to Regionalliga club Karlsruhe.
