North Carolina sophomore defensive back Greg Smith was named to PFF's National Team of the Week following his performance in Saturday's 28-20 loss to Clemson. Smith recorded a career-high seven tackles, including three solo stops, with a tackle for loss, an interception and a forced fumble. He graded out at 90.1 in PFF's evaluation.
Smith has been a key piece of a Tar Heels secondary that has limited opponents through the air. Against Clemson, UNC held the Tigers to 215 passing yards, though the run defense struggled after halftime as Clemson scored 22 second-half points to erase a strong first-half showing by the Tar Heels, who allowed only six points before the break.
On the season, Smith leads North Carolina with two interceptions and is the only Tar Heels player to pick off a pass. He has worked alongside Kaleb Cost and Coleman Bryson in a deep secondary that helped hold TCU to 10 points in Week Zero and ETSU to three points in the Week 2 home opener.
The Tar Heels (2-1) are off this week before hosting Notre Dame on October 3.
