Minnesota moved to 4-0 on October 4 at U.S. Bank Stadium as Will Reichard's five field goals and a career day from T.J. Hockenson powered a 15-10 win over Miami.
The Minnesota Vikings stayed unbeaten on October 4, defeating the Miami Dolphins 15-10 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis to move to 4-0. Kicker Will Reichard accounted for every Minnesota point, going 5-for-5 on field goals as the offense never found the end zone. The victory came with wide receiver Justin Jefferson still recovering from an ankle injury.
The offense's only real touchdown threat came at the end of the game, when tight end T.J. Hockenson deliberately went down at the 2-yard line so Minnesota could take a knee and run out the clock rather than score and give Miami a late possession. The decision reflected head coach Kevin O'Connell's stated emphasis on doing what it takes to win rather than chasing statistics. Minnesota finished the day 0-for-3 in the red zone.
Hockenson was the standout through the air. Working his way back from a knee injury, he caught all 13 of his targets for 119 yards, matching his career high for receptions in a game. With Jefferson unavailable, he gave the offense an underneath option alongside wide receiver Jordan Addison when opposing coverage took away the deeper part of the field.
Quarterback Kyler Murray delivered his most productive passing performance since joining the Vikings, completing 27 of 37 attempts for 247 yards with a 90.7 passer rating and no turnovers. Miami relied on two-high safety coverages it had not shown earlier this season to take away deep throws to Addison, and Murray responded by feeding Hockenson underneath. Pro Football Focus credited him with a 90.6 percent adjusted completion rate, and he threw the ball away four times when no receiver appeared to be open downfield. Sacks remained a recurring problem for the offense.
Defensively, Dallas Turner set the tone against Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis, notching two sacks on five pressures along with a tackle for loss in run defense. He also forced the game's only turnover, a fumble recovered by Blake Cashman. The Vikings committed no giveaways of their own and finished with a 1-0 edge in the turnover battle.
Reichard's perfect afternoon extended his streak to 31 consecutive field goals, the longest active run in the NFL. His kickoffs twice landed in the landing zone in ways that produced muffed returns by the Dolphins. Returner Myles Price chipped in 121 yards on five kick and punt returns, averaging 35 yards per kickoff return and 17 per punt return.
On the ground, Aaron Jones carried 20 times for 94 yards, a 4.7-yard average that repeatedly moved the chains, and broke off three runs of 10 or more yards. As a unit, the offense posted season bests with 336 total yards and 20 first downs, though the inability to finish drives kept the final margin narrow.
Several issues surfaced as well. Wide receiver Jauan Jennings played all but four offensive snaps yet managed one reception for eight yards, safety Harrison Smith drew criticism for his tackling on Miami's two biggest plays of the day, one of which was negated by a penalty, and punter Johnny Hekker misfired on a pair of late punts that gave the Dolphins improved field position. Penalties are also trending upward: after being flagged three times in each of their first two games, the Vikings have drawn 20 penalties over their last two contests.
