The star defenseman will play Minnesota's opener in Nashville without a new deal, with a reported $100 million-plus offer still on the table.
Quinn Hughes is expected to be in the lineup when the Minnesota Wild open the regular season Thursday night in Nashville, and the 27-year-old defenseman will do it without the contract extension many assumed would be finished long ago. Hughes became eligible to sign a new deal with Minnesota shortly after July 1, but opening night has arrived with nothing finalized.
The stakes are enormous. Hughes is playing this season while a package reportedly worth around $20 million per year sits unsigned, and Minnesota has been trying to hand him more than $100 million guaranteed. A serious injury before pen meets paper could put that money in jeopardy.
The risk felt close during Minnesota's preseason finale against the Dallas Stars, when teammate and friend Brock Faber was struck in the side of the head near his ear by a puck and suffered a fractured skull. Hughes called the injury frightening but described it as a fluke hockey play, and acknowledged he carries some nervousness into every game because anything can happen. Even so, that awareness has not pushed him toward signing.
Hughes's resume explains Minnesota's urgency. The Vancouver Canucks drafted him seventh overall in 2018 after two seasons at the University of Michigan, where he posted 10 goals and 52 assists in 69 games. In 2023-24, at age 24, he captured the Norris Trophy with 92 points, including 17 goals and 75 assists, across 82 games. He has not earned an NHL All-Star nod since winning the award.
His road to Minnesota began with a standoff in Vancouver. Dating to at least April 2025, Hughes informed the Canucks he would not re-sign with the club. Roughly eight months later, on Dec. 12, 2025, Vancouver dealt him to the Wild in exchange for Marco Rossi, Liam Öhgren, Zeev Buium and draft picks.
Publicly, Hughes has given the Wild little reason for alarm. He has said he loves the organization and his new teammates, trusts president of hockey operations Bill Guerin, and sees nothing further the franchise needs to prove to him.
Insiders describe a player who simply feels no urgency. TSN's Pierre LeBrun reported that Hughes is not hurrying his decision, that there have been multiple conversations over recent weeks and months between Hughes's agent, Pat Brisson, and Guerin, and that an extension could come together quickly once Hughes gives the go-ahead. LeBrun suggested Guerin would have been surprised three months ago to learn the deal would not be done by opening night, and cautioned the Wild against applying pressure given the time remaining before July 1.
ESPN's Emily Kaplan reported that Hughes's reasoning is a wish to preserve every option and delay the choice as long as he possibly can. Speaking at the preseason Player Media Tour in Las Vegas, Hughes called it a big decision and repeated his affection for Minnesota and his teammates, while stating that his top priority is competing for a Stanley Cup. Outside speculation has centered on a desire to play alongside his younger brothers, Jack and Luke, but Hughes has not framed his decision that way.
Minnesota begins the campaign against the Predators on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 8:00 p.m. EDT at Bridgestone Arena, with the game available on ESPN+, Scripps Sports and MINNHL.
