Florida Rolls Past Ole Miss 52-28 to Headline Week 4 Slate

Jon Sumrall's Gators dominated a top-five Ole Miss team in Gainesville, while Texas held off Tennessee and Wisconsin and Iowa scored road upsets in the Big Ten.

Florida delivered the statement performance of college football's fourth full Saturday, beating No. 5 Ole Miss 52-28 in Gainesville. The win pushed the Gators, now in their first season under head coach Jon Sumrall, to No. 3 in Yahoo Sports' Top 10 rankings.

Sumrall, a former Kentucky linebacker who previously had successful head-coaching stints at Troy and Tulane, got the Florida job last December after athletic director Scott Stricklin pursued Lane Kiffin, who instead left for LSU. After Saturday's win, Sumrall told reporters, "We have not arrived."

Florida's physical style has been on display in back-to-back SEC wins: 44 points at Auburn followed by 52 against the Rebels. The Gators have rushed for nearly 550 yards across those two conference games, and quarterback Aaron Philo is playing smart, consistent football. Florida travels to Missouri next week.

Ole Miss, now 0-for-2 concerns-wise, played without star running back Kewan Lacy after an emotional win over Kiffin and LSU. Florida's defense shut down the Rebels' run game and pressured quarterback Trinidad Chambliss. Defensively, Ole Miss gave up nearly 500 yards Saturday, a week after nearly collapsing in the second half against LSU; the Rebels previously struggled against Louisville. Ole Miss has a bye next week.

Elsewhere, top-ranked Texas survived Tennessee 20-17 in Knoxville. Arch Manning was sacked six times but threw only five incompletions, and hit Ryan Wingo for an 18-yard third-down conversion on an eight-play, 60-yard touchdown drive that gave Texas a 10-point lead. Texas is off next week and owns wins over Ohio State and at Tennessee.

No. 2 Ohio State beat Illinois 42-19 behind receiver Jeremiah Smith, who caught 12 passes for 217 yards and four touchdowns. Smith has more than 600 receiving yards and seven scores through four games and visits Iowa next week. No. 4 Miami routed Central Michigan 52-3 behind quarterback Darrian Mensah, who has 14 touchdown passes and only 12 incompletions this season; Malachi Toney caught six passes for 120 yards. The Hurricanes play at Clemson next week.

No. 5 Alabama beat South Carolina 49-18 as quarterback Keelon Russell threw four touchdowns and rushed for another, completing more than 70 percent of his passes this season with eight touchdowns and two interceptions. The Crimson Tide visit Mississippi State next week.

The Big Ten saw road comeback wins by Iowa over Michigan and Wisconsin over Penn State, while Oregon gashed USC's defense even without starting quarterback Dante Moore. In the Big 12, Utah entered the Top 10 after playing the toughest schedule among conference challengers, and Wake Forest won at Louisville to muddy the question of who will challenge Miami in the ACC. The SEC went 10-2 against other power conferences in non-conference play over the first three weeks.
