Adrien Truffert is open to a Manchester United move, but Bournemouth's negotiating reputation and a possible £60 million asking price stand in the way.
Manchester United are keeping a close watch on Bournemouth left-back Adrien Truffert as a possible improvement on Luke Shaw, according to Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, whose claims were carried by CaughtOffside. Konur described United as unusually transparent about their pursuit and indicated the France international would give a move his blessing if the clubs can agree terms.
Persuading Bournemouth to sell may prove the harder part of any deal. Konur indicated that the Cherries hold a firm grip on the defender's future and pointed to their reputation as tough negotiators, while adding that the player's own willingness should not be an obstacle. Earlier reporting on the situation suggested the club would want a fee of roughly £60 million before considering a sale.
The reason United are shopping at left-back is straightforward. Luke Shaw is in the last year of his deal at Old Trafford, there is no settled deputy behind him, and reinforcing the role has become one of the club's leading priorities. United made two late attempts to sign a player before the summer transfer window closed, and neither one succeeded.
United's interest in the defender did not begin with the latest round of reports. TEAMtalk had already named Truffert as a United target while the club weighed how to reinforce that flank, and David Ornstein addressed the player's situation while answering readers' questions at The Athletic.
Truffert, a senior France international, has become one of Bournemouth's standout performers and a prominent figure at the Vitality Stadium. His experience of the Premier League is part of the appeal for United, a quality he shares with Newcastle's Lewis Hall, another left-back who has featured in the club's thinking at the position.
Bournemouth have also shown in the past that they can extract real value when bigger clubs come calling. The south coast side previously collected major fees from the departures of Antoine Semenyo, Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez, and Truffert now sits in a further group of prized assets at the club alongside Alex Scott, Eli Junior Kroupi and Rayan.
That track record of sales could work against any buyer this time around. Bournemouth are wary of seeing several important squad members leave one after another, and that wariness would only harden their bargaining position if United turn their interest into a formal approach for the defender.
Money will shape United's next move. An asking price around £60 million would turn any deal into a major financial commitment rather than a modest gamble, and the club must weigh just how urgent its need at left-back is against that outlay.
Truffert's national team is in action next: France host Belgium at the Stade de France on Monday, October 5, with kickoff set for 2:45 PM EDT.
