Havertz and Brobbey Forced Off in Germany-Netherlands Friendly

Arsenal forward Kai Havertz and Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey both exited with injuries as Germany faced the Netherlands in Jurgen Klopp's first game in charge.

Germany's meeting with the Netherlands on the opening night of the international break came at a cost for two Premier League clubs, as Arsenal's Kai Havertz and Sunderland's Brian Brobbey both left the field injured.

Havertz had been picked to lead the attack by Jurgen Klopp in the new Germany manager's first match since taking the job. The forward's evening ended around the half-hour mark, when he went down with what looked like a muscle problem. After receiving treatment on his hamstring, which was heavily taped, he was replaced by Younes Ebnoutalib.

The Arsenal man's departure came shortly after a heavy challenge from Quinten Timber, the Crystal Palace summer signing, caught him on the knee. Timber was shown a yellow card for the foul, though it could plausibly have drawn a red. Havertz missed much of the first half of last season with a knee injury, and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will be hoping this is not a recurrence of that problem.

Brobbey's evening also ended early. The Sunderland striker, who arrived on the heels of a hat-trick in his side's 5-3 loss at Manchester City, pulled up with a hamstring issue and needed assistance from the team doctor as he left the field, and now faces time out.

His injury occurred in the build-up to Germany's goal, a contentious moment scored by Felix Nmecha. The Netherlands believed play would be stopped at their request, but Klopp's side played on and scored.

There was a further setback for Germany before kickoff, as Jamal Musiala was withdrawn from the starting lineup with a thigh problem picked up in the warm-up. Nadiem Amiri came in to replace him.
