The Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 14-11 on Tuesday in a game that was far tighter than it appeared for most of the night. Chicago built a commanding lead through seven innings before Kansas City scored three runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth to close the gap. Randal Grichuk and Chase Meidroth each drove in multiple runs to power the visitors.
Grichuk delivered a 4-for-5 night with two doubles, a home run, four runs scored and three RBIs, coming up just a triple short of the cycle. Meidroth added three hits of his own, including a two-run single in the first and a three-run homer — his 16th of the year — in the third. The White Sox scored nine runs across the first four innings against Kansas City starter Daniel Lynch IV, including a three-run shot by Grichuk that made it 9-1.
Starter Anthony Kay allowed four runs on seven hits over four innings before exiting in the fifth. Rookie left-hander Noah Schultz escaped further trouble and later picked up the win. Chicago broke the game open with a five-run seventh that included Munetaka Murakami's 33rd home run of the season and a two-run single from Andrew Benintendi, pushing the advantage to 14-4.
The Royals refused to go quietly. They struck for three runs against Trevor Richards in the eighth, and in the ninth Luis Castillo served up a grand slam to Vinnie Pasquantino — his 15th homer and first career slam — that turned a seven-run cushion into a three-run game. Chicago held on from there to close out the series opener, with Brenton Doyle also extending his hitting streak to seven games.
