Los Angeles Chargers tight end Charlie Kolar will have surgery to repair a broken forearm, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Head coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that Kolar and fellow tight end David Njoku are both being placed on injured reserve. Kolar was seen wearing a sling on his left arm after Sunday's loss to the Raiders.
Kolar is expected to return once his injured reserve stint concludes after Week 6, making him eligible to play again in Week 8, when the Chargers face the Rams on Nov. 1. He has been lightly used in the offense so far, with three receptions for 21 yards across two games.
With both tight ends sidelined, Los Angeles promoted Hayden Rucci to the active roster. Oronde Gadsden had been the only healthy tight end before the move and is expected to take on the primary role at the position, playing most of the snaps in Mike McDaniel's offense.
The 0-2 Chargers play their first road game of the season on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.
