The rivalry began in 1959, when Sonny Grandelius coached Colorado past Baylor 15-7 in Boulder. Meetings were sporadic for decades, spanning Colorado's Big Eight era and Baylor's Southwest Conference days, a stretch that included a 21-9 Baylor victory in the 1986 Bluebonnet Bowl. The series became an annual event once Colorado joined the Big 12 in 1996, and the teams played every year until 2010, the school's last season before leaving for the Pac-12.
When Colorado rejoined the Big 12 in 2024, the conference renewal produced an unforgettable finish. Trailing 31-24 as time ran out, the Buffaloes tied it on a 43-yard Hail Mary from Shedeur Sanders to LaJohntay Wester in the rain. Micah Welch's overtime touchdown put Colorado in front, and the game ended 38-31 when Travis Hunter forced a fumble from Dominic Richardson at the goal line that rolled out of the end zone.
Saturday marks Colorado's first trip to Waco since a 31-30 loss on Oct. 16, 2010, which remains Baylor's most recent win in the series. Colorado's biggest margin of victory came in a 37-0 shutout on Nov. 13, 1999.
