Eli Manning says his nephew, Texas quarterback Arch Manning, is learning how much attention comes with his position. Speaking to Front Office Sports, the former New York Giants passer said he had not spoken with Arch directly about the recent controversy involving ESPN reporter Holly Rowe, but believes his nephew has to learn these lessons through experience.
"You feel like [the media's] your pal, you relax with them a little bit, you try to be funny, and then they can take it and run," Eli Manning said. He added that Arch has to figure out when it is safe to be at ease and when to be more guarded.
The situation stems from Texas's 24-23 win over Ohio State on September 12. After the game, a fabricated AI video circulated that appeared to show Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian slapping Rowe. Arch called the clip "hilarious," drawing criticism. He later apologized to Rowe, saying he understood his comments were hurtful, and Rowe accepted after the two spoke privately.
Arch has since thrown two touchdown passes in a 30-6 win over UTSA, with Texas now 3-0 and ranked No. 1. Rowe is scheduled to work the sideline when Texas hosts Tennessee on September 26, and school officials expect normal interview access to continue.
