Georgia defeated Oklahoma 41-13 on Saturday at Sanford Stadium in Athens, in a game that stayed within reach in stretches but ultimately turned into a lopsided Bulldogs victory. The decisive difference was turnovers: Georgia converted four Oklahoma giveaways into 17 points.
The statistical picture was far tighter than the final score. Oklahoma held the ball for 35:27 compared with Georgia's 24:33, and the Sooners out-gained the Bulldogs through the air, 231 passing yards to 177. Oklahoma also recorded more first downs, 16 to 12, while total yardage was nearly even at 306 yards for Georgia against 296 for the Sooners.
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer finished 25 of 34 for 231 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, numbers that would ordinarily read well. But he also fumbled three times, losing two, and appeared rattled by the home crowd from the start while pressing to generate plays against the Georgia defense.
The game's pivotal moment came near the end of the first half. With Oklahoma at the Georgia 2-yard line, Mateer fumbled and Bulldogs linebacker Chris Cole scooped the ball up and returned it for a touchdown. The play, which drew comparisons to Sean Jones' 99-yard fumble return against Tennessee in 2003, swung the game's momentum decisively toward Georgia.
On the other side, Bulldogs quarterback Gunner Stockton had a modest outing, completing 14 of 25 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown. One of his throws was intercepted on a tipped ball that Oklahoma turned into seven points.
Georgia's running game spread the workload. With Nate Frazier out injured, Chaincey Bowens carried nine times for 26 yards and two touchdowns, while Dwight Phillips ran eight times for 82 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs appeared careful not to overwork Bowens in Frazier's absence.
Sophomore receiver Talyn Taylor led all Georgia receivers with four catches for 110 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown. His performance offered a glimpse of a downfield threat who could pair with London Humphreys and Georgia's tight ends to stretch opposing defenses.
Georgia's offense operated against what was arguably the toughest defense it has faced so far this season, and the unit's showing was solid if unspectacular. Oklahoma, coached by Brent Venables, saw its chances undone primarily by its own mistakes rather than a wide gap in production.
Georgia (improved by the win) moves on to face the Vanderbilt Commodores, a meeting that will be the 84th between the programs and their first since 2023.
