Jonas Urbig is set to keep his place in goal for Germany's Nations League rematch with Greece after keeping a clean sheet in the win over Serbia.
Jonas Urbig is set to keep his place in Germany's goal for Sunday's Nations League rematch with Greece in Thessaloniki. Head coach Jurgen Klopp indicated the Bayern Munich goalkeeper will get a second consecutive start after his clean sheet in Thursday's 2-0 win over Serbia. That victory was the first of Klopp's tenure. It came days after a surprise home defeat against Greece in Augsburg, a result the players now have a quick chance to make amends for in the return fixture.
Klopp has used three different goalkeepers during this international window, but he told a press conference, in comments carried by Bild, that no change is on the way. "At the moment it looks like we won't be making any changes for tomorrow," he said when asked about the position.
The former Liverpool manager explained that the other keepers in the squad play regularly at club level while Urbig does not. "With Jonas, it's true that the other guys who were there all play regularly and Jonas didn't, so he's getting the game," Klopp said.
He rejected the idea that the choice settles any debate over who is first choice. "It actually has nothing to do with the number one status. Normally, the players get match practice elsewhere. With us, we have the national team for that," Klopp said, adding: "Everyone made a great impression. There won't be any problems in that area. They all performed exceptionally well in training and that's why it's good that we can do it this way."
Urbig's Bayern club-mate Aleksandar Pavlovic joined Klopp in front of the media, and the midfielder is also in line to start. "I've already told him he can't talk his way out of the team now," the coach said.
Greece will be without Christos Tzolis, who caused Germany persistent trouble in the Augsburg upset, because of injury. "It's not about who plays, but how they play," Klopp said of the absence. "I hope he recovers quickly and can play again in one, two, or three weeks."
Klopp, 59, was complimentary toward the hosts, suggesting they may be living through a special period. "In my view, this could be the golden generation of Greek football," he said. "We want to field a team that has a chance to win the game. A real and significant chance. We'll have to see how many changes we need for that. To be perfectly honest, every player in the camp deserves to play."
Germany sit third in the group with four points, three behind leaders Greece and one adrift of the Netherlands. Klopp expressed confidence that his side can build on the Serbia win with another result in the competition.
Germany's rematch with Greece is scheduled for Sunday, October 4, at 2:45 PM EDT at Toumba Stadium in Thessaloniki.
