Mitchell Girls Tennis Takes Home Dual Over Watertown 7-2

The Kernels won five of six singles flights and two of three doubles matches at Hitchcock Park to improve to 15-4 on the season.

The Mitchell High School girls tennis team beat visiting Watertown 7-2 in a dual at Hitchcock Park, running its record to 15-4. The Kernels took control in singles, winning five of six flights.

Elliot Smith posted the most one-sided score of the day at No. 4 singles, beating Victoria Bobzien 6-0, 6-1. Charlee Cimpl won Flight 5 by a 6-1, 6-1 margin, Ava Prunty took No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-2, and Taryn Bultje won Flight 6, 6-4, 6-1. Katie Morgan survived the closest match of the dual, edging her Flight 1 opponent 6-5(4), 4-6, 10-6. Mitchell's only singles loss came at No. 2, where Mia Larson fell to Jennika Kettwig 4-6, 6-1, 10-6.

In doubles, Mitchell went 2-1. Larson and Smith teamed for a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, and Cimpl and Bultje won Flight 3, 6-3, 6-2. The top Kernel pair of Morgan and Prunty dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision to Elly Dingsor and Jennika Kettwig.

Mitchell closes its home regular-season schedule Friday, Sept. 25, hosting Brandon Valley at 9 a.m. at Hitchcock Park. The Kernels then head to Aberdeen for the Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament Sept. 28-29.
