The New York Mets made Andy Green their full-time manager on Tuesday, signing him to a three-year deal, then celebrated with a 6-3 road victory over the Texas Rangers. Green had guided the club on an interim basis since Carlos Mendoza's dismissal on June 26. The loss came against a Texas side (78-79) that entered the day one game ahead of Houston in the AL West, with the Astros holding the head-to-head tiebreaker and playing at Seattle as the Rangers wrapped up.
Sean Manaea (6-7) set the tone with nine strikeouts across six innings, surrendering three runs, two of them earned, on three hits. Kodai Senga closed it out in the ninth to record his eighth save. Francisco Alvarez finished with a double, two runs scored and two RBI, while Carson Benge, owner of a Mets rookie-record 159 hits, contributed a pair of doubles, crossed twice and knocked in one.
Alvarez snapped a 3-3 tie in the sixth with a two-run double off Nathan Eovaldi (11-10), making his fourth relief outing since returning from the injured list, and Luis Torrens followed with a sacrifice fly caught in foul ground by first baseman Jake Burger. New York had gone ahead earlier when Benge doubled and came around in the fourth after right fielder Brandon Nimmo was charged with an error on an Alvarez ball hit into the gap, which glanced off the heel of his glove as center fielder Ezequiel Duran closed in.
Playing his first game against the club that drafted him 13th overall in 2011, Nimmo collected two hits, including a leadoff single in a two-run fourth inning that saw Texas use two hit batters and a pair of sacrifice flies to move in front 3-2. The offseason trade that sent Nimmo to Texas last November brought second baseman Marcus Semien to New York. Semien, a member of the Rangers' 2023 World Series championship club, received a warm ovation and a tribute video after the first inning but went 0-for-5.
Rookie right-hander Nolan McLean (11-10, 3.18 ERA) is scheduled to start Wednesday for the Mets. The Rangers had not named their starting pitcher.
