Kansas City wide receiver Tyquan Thornton is out indefinitely after dislocating his left ankle during a 30-27 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton left Sunday's 30-27 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders with a severe left leg injury. Head coach Andy Reid said afterward that the situation "doesn't look good." The injury occurred in the fourth quarter on Oct. 4 at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada, and Thornton had to be helped onto a cart.
The sequence began as one of the biggest plays of the game. With Kansas City trailing 19-17, Thornton caught a 55-yard pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and Raiders safety Treydan Stuckles tackled him from behind. Thornton got to his feet to celebrate the reception, but the injury then forced him back down to the ground.
Former NFL team physician Dr. David Chao, who describes himself as an ex-head team doctor with more than 17 years of experience, reviewed the broadcast footage and posted his assessment on social media Sunday night. In a video, he identified the injury as a left ankle fracture-dislocation, explaining that the two conditions almost always occur together. "It's very hard to dislocate your ankle, near impossible, without there being a fracture," Chao said.
Chao also cautioned viewers against assuming the injury was minor simply because Thornton initially stood up to celebrate. "Judge the injury, not reaction," he wrote in his post. He described the replay as "somewhat graphic," noting that the ankle was "pointed west and the knee pointed north."
The Chiefs have not released an official diagnosis or a timeline for their receiver. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport relayed an update from team medical personnel stating that Thornton suffered a dislocated ankle, which doctors were able to reset earlier in the day. According to that update, Thornton made the team's flight home, will undergo a full evaluation in the morning along with a second opinion, and is out indefinitely but in good spirits.
Reid confirmed that Thornton would fly back to Kansas City with the team so he could be examined further. Multiple outlets have since reported that the wideout is out indefinitely.
Mahomes, who threw the pass on the final play of Thornton's night, addressed the injury after the win and acknowledged how alarming it looked in real time. "First off, I'm just praying for him," Mahomes said. "You never want anyone to get injured and you're hoping it's better than it looked out there. Praying for him, hopefully he comes back healthy."
Thornton was in the middle of a highly productive afternoon before going down, having recorded five receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Kansas City's receiving corps absorbed another blow when wideout Rashee Rice exited the game with a hamstring issue.
The Chiefs have not said when they will provide a further update on Thornton's condition. His outlook should become clearer once the morning evaluation and the second opinion are complete.
