A PikeView program trending upward this regular season hit a roadblock away from home Friday night. The Class AAA Panthers traveled to Class AA Sissonville and came out on the short end of a 47-20 scoreline. The 27-point defeat marked a rough outing for a team that has been on the rise.
Montcalm made its trip to Hinton count, leaving with a 24-14 win over Summers County. Across the state line in Virginia, Tazewell kept visiting Virginia High off the board entirely in an 11-0 victory. The Bulldogs' shutout was one of several posted around the region on the night.
Eastern Montgomery also finished with a zero on the defensive side of the ledger, winning 38-0 at Bland County in Bastian. The journey took the visitors through heavy congestion tied to a Virginia Tech game being played the same evening. The Bears could not find the scoreboard.
One-sided results were plentiful on the West Virginia card. Martinsburg shut out Musselman 61-0, Huntington blanked Capital 51-0 and Morgantown cruised past Wheeling Park 40-0. Cameron routed Bridgeport of Ohio 60-6, Wahama outscored Tyler Consolidated 67-25, Fairmont Senior beat Buckhannon-Upshur 65-30, and George Washington rolled past Parkersburg 64-21.
Other West Virginia games went down to the wire. Tug Valley outlasted Sherman 50-44, Jefferson held off Hedgesville 21-17 and Greenbrier East nipped Shady Spring 34-28. Philip Barbour edged South Harrison 22-16, Richwood slipped past Tygarts Valley 20-13 and Webster County beat Wirt County 20-13.
Two unusual entries stood out among the remaining results. Robert C. Byrd defeated East Fairmont 49-0 in a game recorded with an overtime finish, and Maryland's Fort Hill got past Bridgeport 43-42. Berkeley Springs, meanwhile, beat a pair of Maryland opponents, topping Harwood Southern 20-11 and Oakland Southern 21-11.
Virginia's slate featured its share of runaway scores. Brooke Point overwhelmed North Stafford 74-6, Warwick shut out Menchville 67-0 and Indian River rolled past Western Branch 62-0. William Monroe hammered Turner Ashby 59-3, Mecklenburg County handled Halifax County 59-12, Fuqua School crushed Massanutten Military 62-0, Maury downed Booker T. Washington 58-8, and Southern Gap routed Richlands 61-21.
Narrow margins supplied much of the drama elsewhere in Virginia. Bassett outdueled Tunstall 28-27 in overtime, I.C. Norcom squeezed past Lake Taylor 42-41, and Greensboro Grimsley of North Carolina beat Varina 24-17 in an extra period. Stone Bridge survived Potomac Falls 7-6, West Potomac edged Hayfield 13-12, Nansemond River held off Great Bridge 14-13 and Smithfield turned back Tabb 13-10. James Monroe nipped Caroline 29-28, Fork Union Prep outlasted North Cross 35-33, Maret of Washington, D.C., beat Flint Hill 25-22 and Staunton saw off Waynesboro 18-13.
In a result appearing on both states' lists, Bluefield of West Virginia routed Virginia's George Wythe 63-6. The full Friday rundown covered dozens of additional games across West Virginia and Virginia, closing out another week of the high school football season.
