Portland State chose full 60 minutes in 84-0 Oregon loss

Coach Chris Fisk said his team declined Oregon's offer of shortened quarters to teach players not to back away from difficult situations.

Portland State coach Chris Fisk said his program chose to play a full second half against Oregon after the Ducks offered to shorten the final two quarters, citing player development as the reason. Oregon routed the FCS Vikings 84-0 on Friday, setting a school record for points in a single game after leading 49-0 at halftime. The previous mark of 81 came against Portland State in 2023.

Oregon coach Dan Lanning said Monday that he asked twice at halftime whether Portland State wanted 10-minute quarters for the third and fourth periods. NCAA rules allow such a change if both teams agree, but the Vikings declined.

In a statement to the Oregonian on Tuesday, Fisk said the decision reflected his program's priorities. "We chose that for the development of our program. We came to play 60 minutes, regardless of the outcome," he said, adding that teaching players not to "run away from hard things" was the intent.

Fisk, hired in December after Portland State went 1-11 in 2025, also noted Oregon paid the school nearly $600,000 for the game, according to John Canzano, revenue that matters for FCS programs. With the full second half played, Oregon used four quarterbacks, including former Nebraska starter Dylan Raiola, and saw 14 players record a catch.
