Deacon Jones, the Hall of Fame defensive end who starred for the Los Angeles Rams from 1961 to 1971, has been ranked No. 8 on a list of the best NFL players never to win a Super Bowl. The ranking was compiled by ESPN's Katherine Terrell.
Jones anchored the Rams' famed "Fearsome Foursome" defensive line, winning two Defensive Player of the Year awards and earning eight All-Pro and Pro Bowl selections. Despite the talent around him on the line, the Rams never assembled a championship team during his tenure, and Jones saw limited postseason play.
Terrell noted that Jones was one of six players, alongside Dick Butkus and Alan Page, to be unanimously voted onto the NFL's All-Time Team. According to Pro Football Reference, he unofficially recorded at least 20 sacks in three separate seasons.
Sacks did not become an official NFL statistic until 1982, so Jones has no official career sack total. He is credited unofficially with leading the league in sacks five times. His other honors include the NFL's 1960s All-Decade Team and both the 75th and 100th Anniversary All-Time Teams. The Rams have retired his No. 75 jersey.
