Kittle credits 49ers over Rams, dismisses Australia travel excuse

George Kittle says San Francisco simply beat Los Angeles in Week 1, while acknowledging his own struggles adjusting to the Australia trip.

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle rejected the notion that the Los Angeles Rams lost their season opener because of a compressed travel schedule to Australia. Speaking on the Rich Eisen Show, Kittle said the 49ers were simply the better team that day.

"I think we're a pretty good team. So I think straight up we beat the Rams," Kittle said. He added that the Rams are still "an incredible team with incredible talent" and noted how effective Aaron Donald looked.

The debate stems from Rams coach Sean McVay's decision to fly to Australia only two days before the opener, while the 49ers traveled a week ahead. Kittle said he followed the differing plans with interest, recalling that after two days in Australia he felt foggy and tired himself, though he acknowledged Los Angeles chose to do it their own way.

Kittle also pointed to a comment from McVay taking responsibility for the approach, saying he appreciated the accountability and found the quote amusing.

The two NFC West rivals are scheduled to meet again in Week 14 at Levi's Stadium, a short flight for the Rams that should rule out travel as a factor.

The comments came after the Rams rebounded from the Week 1 loss with a 28-6 win over the New York Giants on Monday Night Football in Week 2.
