Jaxson Dart's injury is more serious than the Giants anticipated, and Jameis Winston is set to take over as the team's starting quarterback, according to Yahoo Sports.
With Winston moving into the starting role, New York is looking to add depth at the position. Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that Brandon Allen is a candidate to re-sign with the club. Jake Haener is currently on the practice squad.
Allen, 34, has spent five of the last six seasons working with Giants quarterbacks coach Brian Callahan, including last season when he backed up Cam Ward on the Titans.
His preseason performance was uneven, completing 26 of 38 passes for 224 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions across three games. Over his career, Allen has appeared in 19 games with 10 starts, completing 56.7 percent of his throws for 1,882 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions, and has started at least once for the Broncos, Bengals and 49ers.
