The Detroit Lions have signed rookie safety Bishop Fitzgerald off the Pittsburgh Steelers' practice squad, according to Dave Birkett. The move adds depth to a Detroit secondary dealing with injuries.
Along with the Fitzgerald signing, Detroit placed defensive back Avonte Maddox on injured reserve and released Joe Bachie, Birkett reported. The departure leaves Pittsburgh thinner at the safety position.
Fitzgerald entered the league with the Tennessee Titans and drew notice for his work in the offseason before being released. The Steelers then added him to their practice squad.
The rookie defensive back had a well-traveled college career, playing at Coffeyville Community College, North Carolina State and USC. He recorded five interceptions during the 2025 season.
