Steelers Work Out Brade, Brown and Jackson at Safety

Pittsburgh evaluated three free-agent safeties on Tuesday as it deals with an injury to starter Deshon Elliott.

The Pittsburgh Steelers brought three safeties in for workouts on Tuesday at their UPMC Rooney Sports Complex facility: Beau Brade, Austin Brown and Dan Jackson.

Brade earned All-Big Ten honorable mention recognition in 2022 and 2023 while leading Maryland in tackles in each of those years. He entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Baltimore Ravens, appearing solely on special teams under John Harbaugh as a rookie, and later joined the New York Giants after Baltimore cut him. He spent last season in New York, again on special teams, before his release last month.

Brown, a rookie, started all 12 of Wisconsin's games last fall and finished that campaign with 52 tackles, one tackle for loss and three passes defended, part of 24 career starts for the Badgers. He was with the Indianapolis Colts during the summer. Jackson played his college ball at Georgia and was chosen 230th overall in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft by Detroit, which waived him last month.

In a related move, the Lions signed Bishop Fitzgerald, an undrafted rookie and consensus All-American at USC last season, off Pittsburgh's practice squad on Tuesday. The workouts come with starting safety Deshon Elliott on injured reserve.
