Steelers audition three safetimes amid secondary depth concerns

Pittsburgh brought in Beau Brade, Austin Brown and Dan Jackson for tryouts after injuries and a practice-squad departure thinned the safety spot.

With DeShon Elliott on injured reserve and Bishop Fitzgerald having been signed away from the practice squad, the Pittsburgh Steelers held tryouts for three safeties Tuesday, according to the NFL transaction page and a report from Alan Saunders of Steelers Now.

The players who auditioned were Beau Brade, Austin Brown and Dan Jackson, with the session taking place at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

Brade, the most seasoned of the trio, went undrafted in 2024 and has spent time with Baltimore and the New York Giants. He has played 26 NFL games, all as a reserve, logging 400 special teams snaps versus 12 on defense.

Brown entered the league as an undrafted free agent this year, first signing with Indianapolis. As a senior at Wisconsin, he recorded 40 tackles and broke up three passes.

Jackson was a 2025 seventh-round selection by Detroit out of Georgia but spent his rookie year on injured reserve without appearing in a game. His final college season featured 64 tackles, three pass breakups and two interceptions.

As of Tuesday evening, the Steelers had not added any of the three tryout players to the roster.
