Pittsburgh's assistant general manager joined team scouts in Morgantown as the Oklahoma State quarterback threw for 389 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-24 win over West Virginia.
The Pittsburgh Steelers had a sizable group of evaluators in Morgantown, West Virginia, on Saturday evening, with assistant general manager Andy Weidl among the team's scouts at Milan Puskar Stadium for Oklahoma State's game against West Virginia. Their presence was tied to Cowboys quarterback Drew Mestemaker, who is regarded as one of the top quarterback prospects available for the 2027 NFL Draft.
A contingent of that size rarely goes unnoticed at a college stadium. Reporter Joey Bray noted on social media during the contest that Weidl was only one of many Pittsburgh staff members in attendance.
Mestemaker gave the decision-makers one of the fullest possible performances to evaluate. The redshirt sophomore completed 20 of 27 passes for 389 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Oklahoma State came away with a 41-24 road victory over a Mountaineers team that entered the night without a loss on its record.
The game tilted after halftime, when the Cowboys' passing attack took command. Mestemaker connected on three completions of more than 45 yards across the final two quarters, stretching the West Virginia defense repeatedly as his side pulled away.
The showing matched the profile that has lifted the North Texas transfer up 2027 draft boards. Listed at six feet three inches, Mestemaker brings the size NFL teams traditionally look for at the position. Against the Mountaineers he threw the deep ball without visible strain, dropped accurate passes over defenders, worked in rhythm with his receivers and made sensible decisions with the football.
He was not the only possible 2027 draftee to draw attention. Wide receiver Wyatt Young, viewed as a prospect in that same class, finished with eight catches for 192 yards and two touchdowns in the Oklahoma State offense.
Mestemaker's climb as a draft prospect began before the trip to Morgantown. His stock had risen on the strength of a performance against then-No. 6 Oregon, a game in which he got the better of Dante Moore, another quarterback viewed as a potential high selection in the 2027 draft.
For West Virginia, the result ended a perfect start to the season. The Mountaineers arrived unbeaten and left with a defeat that came largely through the air once the Cowboys found another gear after the break.
Attention in Pittsburgh now turns back to the Steelers' own schedule, with a Week 3 game against the Cincinnati Bengals next on the slate. Running back Rico Dowdle has been ruled out of that contest, Joey Porter Jr. is considered unlikely to play and the club has placed Gennings Dunker on injured reserve. The organization has also continued to move toward a lineup change on the offensive line. The 2027 NFL Draft itself sits roughly seven months away, which made Saturday's visit an early step in the evaluation of one of the class's top quarterback prospects.
