Mets remove interim tag, hand Andy Green full-time manager role

New York signed Andy Green to a reported three-year deal after he replaced Carlos Mendoza in June, reversing expectations he would return to the front office.

The Mets announced Tuesday that Andy Green will remain as their manager, agreeing to a reported three-year contract. Green had served on an interim basis since taking over for Carlos Mendoza in late June.

Before the announcement, Green was expected to return to his front office role as senior vice president of player development. Owner Steve Cohen had said earlier in the season that the club planned a managerial search but would welcome Green if he changed his mind.

According to The Athletic's Will Sammon, Mets players backed Green for the full-time job, with veterans citing him as their preference. Young players such as Carson Benge and Nolan McLean have performed better since Green took over, and the team has played improved baseball, though it remains a game below .500 under him.

Green, 49, previously managed the Padres for four seasons from 2016 to 2019, compiling a career record of 311-404. He has never had a winning season as a manager but could reach one if the Mets finish the year strong.
