San Francisco is turning to the 12-year veteran as injuries pile up at wide receiver ahead of Week 3.
The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly signing wide receiver Brandin Cooks to their practice squad, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The plan is for Cooks to get up to speed before being activated to the main roster.
San Francisco is dealing with several injuries at the position. Rookie wideout De'Zhaun Stribling is on injured reserve with an ankle injury, and Demarcay Robinson suffered a high-ankle sprain in the team's Week 2 win over Miami that is expected to sideline him three to six weeks.
Mike Evans was listed as questionable to return at the end of that Dolphins game with a hip injury, and head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday the issue will be monitored through the week. It remains unclear whether Cooks can absorb the playbook quickly enough to be active for Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals.
Cooks, a first-round pick by New Orleans in the 2014 NFL Draft, has also played for the Patriots, Rams, Texans, Cowboys and Bills. Across 173 career games, he has 9,811 receiving yards and 60 touchdowns, leaving him 189 yards shy of 10,000 for his career. He recorded 279 yards over 15 games last season with the Saints and Bills.
