The Athletics stormed back from a 6-0 deficit with nine unanswered runs across the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to beat the Los Angeles Angels 9-7 on Monday at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento. It was the opener of a two-game series, and the win kept the A's out of last place in their division while leaving them one victory shy of avoiding a 100-loss season.
Los Angeles built its lead against A's opener Brady Basso, who was charged with five runs. Denzer Guzman highlighted the early offense with a three-run homer in the third, his eighth of the year and his fourth straight game with a home run at Sutter Health Park. Vaughn Grissom added an RBI single in the sixth off Seth Johnson to make it 6-0.
The comeback began in the sixth when Lawrence Butler tripled home Shea Langeliers. In the seventh, Carlos Cortes delivered a pinch-hit RBI triple and scored on Langeliers' single, and Los Angeles relievers Jose Fermin and Tayler Saucedo combined to walk in another run as the lead shrank to 6-4.
Cortes struck again in the eighth, breaking a 6-6 tie with a two-run homer to right-center, his 10th of the season, off Sam Bachman. Zack Gelof added a two-run shot in the inning for insurance. Luis Medina earned the win in relief.
