Bruno Genesio's tenure as Olympique de Marseille manager may not survive until the end of the year, according to Loic Tanzi of L'Équipe, speaking on La Chaîne L'Équipe. Tanzi indicated that the coach remaining in his post over the holiday period would come as a major surprise.
Marseille appointed Genesio during the summer, but results have been poor. The team has been beaten in four of its opening five Ligue 1 fixtures under the Frenchman, and five of six across all competitions — a run without precedent in the club's history.
The club's finances are a major source of the trouble. Marseille have had to part with several important squad members while bringing in no replacements, a situation Genesio has openly admitted has caught him off guard.
There are also obstacles to a dismissal. Genesio earns €400,000 each month, money the club cannot easily pay out. He ruled out walking away after Sunday's loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
Beyond results, relations with the board have soured. Genesio's repeated public complaints have irritated club officials, who are also displeased that he has ignored an early-season instruction to field young players in order to raise their transfer value.
