Liverpool's Lewis Koumas Ready for Wales Nations League Tests

The 21-year-old forward has broken into Liverpool's first team under Andoni Iraola and now turns his attention to Wales fixtures against Portugal, Denmark and Norway.

Lewis Koumas has made five appearances for Liverpool this season and quickly convinced new manager Andoni Iraola of his value, doing so within the first week of pre-season. The 21-year-old forward has since made his Premier League and Champions League debuts, and delivered a man-of-the-match display against Tottenham that won over the Anfield support.

His path to the first team was not direct. After scoring in an FA Cup tie against Southampton in February 2024 and being an unused substitute in Liverpool's League Cup final win over Chelsea, Koumas spent more than 900 days away from the first team, taking in Championship loan spells at Stoke City, Birmingham City and Hull City, where he helped the club win promotion through the play-offs.

Koumas is the son of former Wales international Jason Koumas, who won 34 caps and scored 10 goals between 2001 and 2009 while playing for Tranmere Rovers, West Bromwich Albion, Cardiff City and Wigan Athletic. The younger Koumas joined Liverpool's academy at primary school age and moved from midfield to a forward role at 16.

Wales manager Craig Bellamy said he believes Koumas will be a really important player for the national team for years to come. Koumas is set to feature in Nations League matches against Portugal, Denmark and Norway, sharing a stage with players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland.
