Jude Gallagher's bid for a medal at the European Boxing Championships in Bulgaria came to an end in the lightweight quarter-finals, where he lost a 3-2 split decision to Spain's Ewart Andres Marin Hernandez.
The County Tyrone boxer, from Newtownstewart, was behind early as Cuban-born Hernandez used southpaw speed and movement to take the opening round on three of the five judges' cards. Gallagher pressed forward and landed his left hand with success, and Hernandez appeared to fade in the second stanza, though four judges still favored the Spaniard.
Needing a strong finish, Gallagher connected with left hands late in the final round after an untied lace had briefly delayed Hernandez before the session began. It was not enough to turn the bout around, with the final scores reading 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28 for Hernandez against 28-29 and 28-29 for Gallagher.
Members of the Team Ireland corner expressed unhappiness with the verdict, but the decision stood and Gallagher's tournament run was over.
