Michigan's high school football regular season has reached its closing stretch, and the MHSAA playoff points standings as of Oct. 1 lay out where each division stands heading into Week 6. Selection weekend is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 25, giving teams less than four weeks to affect their position.
The playoff format covers 10 divisions. Each 11-player postseason bracket holds 32 teams, while the 8-player divisions take 16. Qualification runs through the points system, with the standings reflecting results through Oct. 1.
Clarkston leads Division 1 at 77.000 points, and every school in the top 10 owns a 5-0 record, down to Grand Blanc at 65.600. Romeo (72.400), East Kentwood (71.200), Detroit Catholic Central (70.850) and Northville (70.800) hold the next four places. Plymouth and Rochester share the No. 24 position at 49.200 apiece, and Grandville (39.800), Kalamazoo Central (39.200) and Jenison (38.600) are the first three teams out.
In Division 2, South Lyon East paces the field at 68.000, ahead of fellow unbeatens Temperance Bedford (61.467) and Gibraltar Carlson (61.400). Byron Center and Orchard Lake St. Mary's are tied for fourth at 60.200, while Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice and Grosse Pointe South share 12th at 55.600. Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern, Lapeer and Detroit U of D Jesuit currently stand as the first three out.
Port Huron tops Division 3 at 65.200, with Chelsea (64.000), Mount Pleasant (63.400), Coopersville (62.200) and Mason (60.200) also 5-0. The division's table includes ties at Nos. 6, 18 and 29, and Garden City and Gaylord are level at 35.200 in the final qualifying position. Petoskey (34.800), Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood (33.800) and Oak Park (31.800) are the first three out.
Division 4 belongs to Vicksburg at 58.400, followed by the unbeatens Dearborn Divine Child (56.800), Goodrich (56.600), Portland (54.600) and Edwardsburg (52.800). At the bottom of the field, Charlotte and Marysville are tied at 34.200 for the last spot in the bracket. Spring Lake (33.400), Williamston (32.800) and North Branch (29.800) sit as the first three out.
Division 5 is led by Grand Rapids Catholic Central, whose 4-1 record has produced 56.800 points, one place ahead of 4-1 Grand Rapids West Catholic at 54.200. Unbeaten Saginaw Swan Valley (50.600), Monroe Jefferson (49.800), Hopkins (47.800), Berrien Springs and Kingsford (46.400 each) and Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic Prep (45.567) make up the rest of the leading group, with 5-0 Ida further down at 42.600.
Point averages will continue to shift across the remaining regular-season games, and the margins are thin: ties appear in every division listed, including shared final qualifying spots in Divisions 3 and 4. The fields will be finalized at the MHSAA's selection weekend on Oct. 25.
