A new poll is live to select the SouthCoast high school football Player of the Week for games played Sept. 24-25. Readers can submit ballots until 8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4.
The Week 1 honor went to Apponequet freshman Beckett Canessa, who drew more than 1,000 votes, or 88% of those cast. He scored twice as the Lakers moved to 2-0, matching what the program managed across all of last season. A 37-yard run produced one touchdown, and a 75-yard reception from his older brother, Paxton, produced the other. He contributed a PAT as well.
Prior to Canessa, the distinction belonged to Bishop Stang's Andrew Guenette. Preseason voting crowned Dartmouth's Chase Afonso as Offensive Player of the Year with 39%, while Old Rochester's Owen Pelland took the defensive award with 60%.
Apponequet, still unbeaten after beating Seekonk, put four players on the Week 3 ballot. Paxton Canessa went 9-for-16 for 199 yards and two touchdowns, and Joe Procaccini delivered five touchdowns in all — 166 yards on 19 rushes with scores from 24, 2 and 61 yards, plus three catches for 112 yards and scoring receptions of 30 and 62 yards. Cody Miranda added two sacks, a tackle for loss and pressure on the quarterback during the opening half, and Noah Jenney recovered two Seekonk fumbles inside the red zone.
Bishop Stang fell to Bishop Fenwick despite Nathan Zexter, who ran for 268 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries, found the end zone from 56, 66 and 41 yards and converted four extra points. Dartmouth also lost, dropping a decision to Old Rochester, yet landed two nominees: Aidan Gendron went 4-for-9 for 80 yards and a touchdown in his first appearance of the season, and Tom Pallatroni gained 48 yards on 13 rushes and scored from 8 yards out.
Three Fairhaven players earned spots after the win over Bourne. Carter Frates finished with four receptions for 96 yards and three touchdowns; Jackson Ponte went 6-for-9 through the air for 142 yards and three scores and added an interception return for a touchdown; and Jackson Williams supplied a 35-yard touchdown run and one of the team's five interceptions. GNB Voc-Tech, also a winner over Bristol-Plymouth, is represented by Gabe Figueroa (10-for-17 passing, 175 yards, three touchdowns), Quincy Stroud (six catches, 127 yards, two touchdowns and a 78-yard kickoff-return score) and AJ Degrace (91 yards on 11 rushes).
New Bedford stayed unbeaten by beating Hopkinton, and three Whalers made the list. Jordyn Correia hauled in a 45-yard scoring pass, came away with a fumble recovery and returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown; Logan Desmarais scored on the ground from 3 and 35 yards; and Tru Gonsalves-Cosme tossed a scoring pass, ran for one two-point conversion and completed two more.
Old Rochester's three nominees each played a part in the win over Dartmouth. Benji Baptiste ran for 206 yards and two touchdowns on 33 attempts, pulling his team even on a 5-yard run with 23 seconds left. Matt Tobin's tackle for loss forced a punt that set up the decisive possession, and Nolin Vieira's extra point inside the final minute provided the winning margin. Old Colony, beaten by South Shore, is represented by David Bryer, who picked up 64 yards on 11 attempts with a touchdown and a successful two-point try, and Will Ciavarro, who added 79 yards on 11 attempts, with his 18-yard scoring run coming in the fourth quarter.
